When Jon-y met Dany
So it’s finally here, the big meeting, we kick things off with Jon Snow, Ser Davos and some of his company are ashore on Dragonstone as he prepares to meet Daenerys, meeting Tyrion and Missandei first (fanboy squealing over this scene) and after Snows company hands over their weapons and some introductions, they all head off to the Dragonstone keep. Surprise dragons, Danys babies, well teenagers now I guess surprise Jon and Davos
Melisandre and Varys talk atop a cliff, with Melisandre wisely avoiding Davos especially as she parted from them in not the best terms, Varys warns her of returning to Westeros if she leaves but she insists she will and she will die in the country as well, interesting… and on to the actual meeting, Jon Snow meets Daenerys and she rolls off her titles right off the bat, Jon seems a bit nonplussed. Their exchange is.. frosty to say the least, Dany is unshaken by Jon Snows plight and tales of White Walkers, probably not believing him despite Tyrion vouching for him and Jon doesn’t want to bend the Knee for her, they seem to be at an impasse.
The two leaders exchange about their fathers was an interesting point as well, both Dany and Jon not wanting to live by their predecessors actions, though Dany wants Jon to serve as his ancestor pledged to serve house Targaryen, interesting how that works out. Anyway there is no moving forward at this point, despite Jon pleading and Tyrion tryin to get him to bend the knee and at a high point of tension, Varys comes in to deliver some news and Jon/Davos are taken out of the throne room “am I your prisoner”? asks Jon, “Not yet” is Danys reply. What was Varys on about? Well he’s letting Dany know about the Greyjoys ships that got attacked by Euron and the aftermath but not all of the Greyjoys died, Theon survived and is picked up by a not very pleased Greyjoy ship loyal to him.
A welcome for a king
In Kings Landing Euron arrives and is treated like well, a king, with Yara, Ilaria and the last sand Snake in tow, Euron lauds up his victory and makes clear what he wants as a reward (Cersei), much to Jamies chagrin and after a cheeky, brash comment from Euron, Jamie looks like he wanted to go at it with him but of course, this isn’t the place or time. And in a dungeon in the keep, Cersei exacts her revenge on Ilaria Sand, with her and the youngest sand snake chained up and after much taunting, she decides to condemn Ilaria to watch her daughter die by the same poison method that killed Myrcella, what a cruel, dark way to go.
Back at Winterfell, Sansa has a good hold on things and is advising on the food rations and how to well, survive the winter among other things, she seems to have a keen eye on details and is quite savvy in how to run things in peace time, Littlefinger pulls her aside to have a little chat but is abruptly stopped by an announcement, something showing up at the entrance and that something is….. Bran Stark and Meera Reed. The first emotional Stark re-union of the season then and it’s great to see, Sansa and Bran catch up a bit in an unintentionally funny scene for me, with Brans new powers, Sansa doesn’t quite understand it all, how Bran can see all of time happening simultaneously but hey, being all seeing and all knowing is cool, I guess.
In the Citadel, a Maester examines Jorahs now dragonscale free albeit scarred body and comments on how well he was cured, seemingly unaware it was Sams’ doing and after the maester leaves, Jorah thanks Sam and it’s the least he could do, after Jorahs father did so much for him in the Nightswatch, to paraphrase Sam, Jorah is off to Dragonstone to re-unite with Daenerys of course because where else would he go? Later on, the same Maester has a meeting with Sam and knew that he carried out the procedure, against Citadel rules and instead of punishing him, congratulates him but still has Sam carry out menial administrative tasks in copying scrolls and manuscripts, so yeah fair enough.
A Lannister always pays their debts
Tyrion joins Jon Snow in Brooding atop another cliff on Dragonstone, Tyrion approaching him with several logic bombs on how Dany is right to not believe Jon to just go and fight an enemy she hasn’t seen and he asks Jon to go for a more simple approach, though he himself believes mr Snow anyway, Tyrion also approaches Dany and asks her to be more civil with Jon and let him mine the Dragonglass as it’s no big deal to them if Jon takes it or not. Jon and Dany ‘bond’? and at least agree to have Jon take the Dragonglass so things are moving forward for the two rulers, in some ways at least. Interestingly next up is a sort of play by play from Tyrion on Danys strategy moving forward to take on Westeros, the Unsullied have sailed to Casterly Rock and come up against an ‘impregnable’ defence but have a way around it, thanks to Tyrions knowledge, they take the castle but have been outwitted as the Lannisters left it mostly unmanned and attacked House Tyrell instead.
The Tyrells get swept over and Jamie goes up to the keep to have a chat with everyones favourite, Olenna Tyrell and after an interesting exchange in which we find out Jamie talked Cersei out of gruesome executions for Olenna and with some final words on Cersei, how she’s turning mad and on how she poisoned Joffrey which definitely riles up Jamie, Jamie gives her poison to take and she will die – at some point, though we don’t see it. And that wraps up a fairly engaging and eventful episode, Daenerys is making moves in Westeros now and so is Cersei, with malice and vindictive cruelty, Jon Snow has finally got his dragonglass and is warming to Daenerys and vice versa, it seems, I wonder what’s in store in the next 4 episodes, exciting stuff I hope. And here are some talking points.
. Why doesn’t Jon want Dany to know he’s resurrected? They clearly both believe in magic and that could help her to believe in White Walkers possibly
. Why would the Lannisters take on the Tyrells like that, was it just for Olenna? They’re already stretched enough and have like no allies at this point
. Where is Arya? And Gendry?!
